Message from the Islamic Institutions of Liberia
On this historic occasion of the 21st Anniversary of the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the Islamic community of Liberia joins the Government of Liberia, civil society, and all peace-loving citizens in commemorating more than two decades of uninterrupted peace—an end to one of the most brutal civil wars in the history of our nation.
The Liberian civil conflict left deep scars across all sectors of society. As Islamic institutions, we remembered with solemn reflection the immense suffering endured by Muslims during the years of violence and instability. Communities were displaced, mosques were targeted and destroyed, and many faithful were subjected to pain and hardship. Yet, in the midst of despair, hope prevailed.
The peace we enjoy today was hard-earned through years of courageous dialogue and negotiation, including critical meetings that led to the Akosombo Accords (1, 2, and 3) and finally culminated in the signing of the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement on August 18, 2003. This agreement laid the foundation for national reconciliation, democratic governance, and sustainable development.
Today, as we mark 21 years of the absence of war, the Muslim community stands united with all Liberians in gratitude to Almighty Allah for His mercy and protection. We also express deep appreciation to the regional bodies—ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations, as well as international partners—for their relentless support during our country’s darkest days.
We as Muslims reaffirm our commitment to peace, tolerance, and national development. The involvement of Muslims in government and national institutions today is a testimony of Liberia’s growing inclusiveness and unity. We pledge to continue contributing meaningfully to the peacebuilding process, interfaith dialogue, youth empowerment, and moral guidance across the country.
May Liberia continue to enjoy lasting peace, unity, and progress.
Peace is not just the absence of war—it is the presence of justice, harmony, and mutual respect.
Allahu Akbar! Long live Liberia! Long live the People of Liberia!
